Watch out for the Pirates!
14 rampaging Pirates will be invading Beckington on Friday. Please find attached three stunning Pirate portraits from Sheri o'Reilly,so you can see the type of portrait that you can take. Please arrive at 7.30 pm if possible and bring your cameras, lenses, batteries and - of course - memory cards. It's an opportunity to take some great images suitable for competitions. Members will be encouraged to supply David with a selection of edited images at max 1400 pixels wide or 1050 pixels high. He will then set up an FWCC FaceBook Pirate Portrait page to share with the Pirates. Please email your images to [email protected].

And Listen to the Band!
This Saturday at Beckington, from about 4.30 till 6.30, rock band The Helm will be playing for you to practise live photography under lights. Another very good reason to charge your batteries. Please sign up at the club on Friday if you wish to attend. Look for the guys playing on www.thehelmband.co.uk

Sixty Members
We're glad to say that our membership is steadily growing. And, very pleasingly, of our 11 new members, no less than 7 entered last week's first competition of the season. What is more, they took the top 3 places in the Club Class! Congratulations to Joel Baxter (1st & 3rd), Sheri o'Reilly (2nd) and also to João Sanchez (4th & 9th). The rest of us Cs are going to have to up our game, clearly!
Well-deserved Premier Class winners were Andrew de Mora (1st), Mary Maynard (2nd) and Alan Denison (3rd). Visit https://www.fromewessexcameraclub.com/dpi-opening-oct-2018.html to see all the scoring images.

Have you seen an Old Git's Hat?

A serious question. Tom Fahey's hat, proudly stating that "Old Gits Rule", precious because his daughter gave it to him, has gone missing. It seems he left it at Beckington one Friday evening recently and that someone took charge of it for him. But who that someone was, nobody can remember. If you have it, then please do bring it along on Friday and give it back to the Old G.... Sorry -  to Tom in person! He'll be so very grateful.

An Invitation
Tony Gervis FRPS, an eminent and widely travelled photographer, will be speaking at Calne Camera Club on Monday 22nd October.  Examples of his work may be found on his web site at www.tonygervis.com. This promises to be an excellent evening and Calne look forward to seeing some FWCC members  at the Lansdowne Hall, Derry Hill, Calne, SN11 9QY.

And, speaking of Calne ....
.... David has had an amazing 100+ submissions from which he and his team will choose the 10 most suitable entries for the Multiclub battle next month. He will not be in a position to announce which the top 10 photographs are until Thursday, so we shall hold next week's newsletter back for a day, to bring you all the news.

Don't Forget
Your Salon needs you! FWCC members enter for free, and you still have time left. Visit https://www.fromewessexcameraclub.com/salon-info.html
The Salon selection weekend (10th - 11th November), like the Camera Fair (28th October), needs all hands on deck. If you can help at either event, please don't be shy about coming forward.

This Week’s Meeting
The first internal competition of the year, Open Digital, and we are back to the “top ten” scoring system which will have the lucky ten in each group holding their breath as the results unfold.

Calne Multi-Club Hand-in
A reminder that this Friday, 12th, is the final day for submissions for this open digital competition. Please remember to use the old sizing (1400 x 1250), and let David have your very best photographs – [email protected].

Print Hand-in
The hand-in date for the first Print competition is next week, 19th October, but Stan will have a box ready this week for anyone who needs to hand prints in early.

Our New Equipment Officer
Sadly, Geoff Eynon has had to step down from this role,  and we thank him for all that he has contributed to the Club’s success over many years, as Treasurer, as Equipment guru, as a calm counsellor and ever-ready practical help. In recognition, we have made Geoff our first-ever Honorary Member. We miss you, Geoff, and are all thinking of you.
Now, we are very pleased that Harvard Dallibar has agreed to roll up his sleeves and accept co-option as Equipment Officer.

Photographic Paper Bargain
Geoff has for sale the following print papers, only purchased in June for the new season:
Fotospeed Digital PF Gloss270:  A4, box of 50 minus 1 sheet (49 sheets)
Fotospeed Digital PFGloss270:  A3, box of  50 sheets
Fotospeed Digital PF Lustre:       A3, box of 50 sheets
The list price of the A3 alone is £62.00, and Geoff is only asking £40 for the whole package. If you are interested, please contact [email protected].

Cameras at the Ready!
The meeting on 19th, a studio evening of Pirate Portraits, will be followed on Saturday 20th by the Band Shoot (4.30 – 6.30 at Beckington). If you wish to join in on the Saturday, please remember to sign up on the list at the Club: there are still a few places left.

Help Needed
Please remember our Camera Fair at the Cheese and Grain Hall on Sunday 28th October. It is a good opportunity to buy and sell (free admission for Club members), and it raises important funds to help the Club run the programme we all enjoy. But hands are needed to help, so if you can spare even an hour or so between 7 and 1, do please come along. You’ll enjoy it, too.
And looming on the horizon is the FSOP nation Salon selection weekend (10th and 11th November), when again practical help will be very much appreciated: more news of that nearer the time.

WCPF AGM
I am forwarding separately the documents relating to the AGM of our parent body, the Western Counties’ Photographic Federation.

Photographing Food at Wells
Food photography is notoriously tricky, and some members may wish to take advantage of this offer from the Wells Food Festival:
Next Sunday (14th) the Wells Food Festival is delighted to have food photographer Neil White and food stylist Helen Upshall running two free photography workshops, giving tips on the tricks of their trade. I do hope some of your members would like to come along. Please visit the website wellsfoodfestival.co.uk, follow the link What's On and then Photography Workshops.

This Week’s Meeting
Andrew de Mora and Andrew Washington will be presenting a Lightroom workshop. Please bring along your laptop if you have Lightroom loaded, as we shall all have much to learn and to practise, and no doubt many questions to ask them.

Call for Entries for Selection for the Calne MultiClub Battle in November
Max 3 entries, to be submitted by each FWCC Member. This is an Open competition, so anything goes, but we especially require natural history images. Please enter your very best work for selection.
Entries are to be presented in j-peg format, with the size limited to1400 x  pixels (1050 maximum height).
Entries should be labelled with the member’s name and the image title,
e.g. Fred Fleetwood_View of Florence.jpg
Members may submit entries for ONE Club only.
Please note: entries must reach David by 12th October 2018 at the latest. Please e-mail them as attachments to [email protected]

An Extra Event – not on the Published Programme
On Saturday 20th October, a local rock band will be playing in Beckington Memorial Hall, with appropriate lighting, just for FWCC members to photograph them. This is rather a special treat, and the hire of the hall does make it rather an expensive one, so this event will only run if a minimum of 20 members sign up for it. If you would like to join in, please sign up on the form at a Club meeting.

Your Secretary, after rather a long absence, is pleased to be able to say
See you on Friday!
